Who's actually offended by Andy Gray's off-air laddism?

Clearly there’s more going on in the Sky Sports affair, which has seen the satellite broadcaster dumping on its middle-aged, laddish presenters Andy Gray and Richard Keys, than just the unacceptability of the men’s sudden alleged sexism.
However I want to focus on the main exhibit for the ‘prosecution’ – not the leaked off-camera disparaging banter about female assistant referee Sian Massey and West Ham’s Karren Brady before Saturday’s Wolves v. Liverpool match – but the incident where Gray is alleged to have made a lewd remark to co-presenter and former model Charlotte Jackson (pictured above).
Sky Sports said it had sacked Gray "in response to new evidence of unacceptable and offensive behaviour.” This event took place in December but the tape of the incident – also off-air – had only surfaced after the January 22nd argy-bargy.
Read on before you play the video at the end of this post. Gray is seen tucking the cable of his microphone into the waist band of his trousers prior to going on air – and he asks Jackson to “just tuck that in for me would you?”
The remark is either ribald or lewd depending on how easily offended you are. Either way it was clearly intended as a joke between equals. Jackson, once a lad’s mag favorite, is seen either to half-smile moments into the video – or ignore Gray or else doesn’t hear him as she concentrates about to go ‘live’.
I accept the remark would be much more offensive said to a woman – perhaps a junior make-up girl – further down the pecking order who might feel powerless to respond. I hate those in authority who use their position to embarrass subordinates.
But even then I like to think any female working in the capital - regardless of her status - knows how to respond to an unwelcome off-colour suggestion. She tells the offending male to either f**k off, gives him the ‘finger’, or both in the case of an overweight, aging, boorish sports presenter plus the advice “in your dreams, saddo.”
If this doesn't work then by all means let the persistent nuisance feel the weight of the law.

  4. Interesting post this one. Because as you can see on the video clip, Charlotte is trying rally hard to be professional, whilst Andy and his 'mate' are not.

  5. I always liked Andy Gray;s 'action analysis'. He will be missed this season. Sacking him was the worst thing that the Murdoch Group has done. Other than closing the News of the World, of course.

  7. Andy Gray and pal may have underestimated Charlotte Jackson. The internet links about her definitely prove that she is an experienced and versatile presenter who has had some important gigs.

  8. Gary Neville who is helping to fill the void left by Andy Gray at Sky Sports is proving to be a revelation with his sober and informed opinions on the soccer games to which he has been contributing as a pundit.

  9. I watched Charlotte Jackson on Sky Sports 2 the other day, looking ravishingly beautiful in a deep pinky-red dress, giving a flawless cameo performance reading the European Champions League soccer results. Not surprising, as this sporty woman has herself apparently sustained 2 metatarsal fractures playing soccer.

  11. Andy must have assumed that Charlotte liked his sense of humour.

  13. All this political correctness in television. It's enough to turn a man's hair Gray.

  14. Meanwhile where is Charlotte Jackson today?

  15. Charlotte photograph well. Unfortunately, I can't bring myself to same for Andy.

  16. Watch Charlotte say to Jim White "i'll give you one", whilst gently touching his arm. This is a lady who seems au fait with innuendo banter, between the sexes. Obviously the bosses at Sky were not so au fait. So goodbye Andy.

  17. Yes Ok. But Jim Wight is better looking than Andy Gray. But then again, so is Charlotte.

  18. Poor old Andy. All he was trying to do was to get a lady with a sense of humour, ie Charlotte, to 'corpse', as she 'staightened up', to present, just before the cameras started to roll. Unfortunately for Andy, and his 'Batman and Robin' sidekick, they were already rolling !
